Full Version: Weight redistribution on Januvia

Has anyone noticed more fat around the middle since starting Januvia? I am considering going off this drug to see if that is what is causing it. My weight has not changed, but I feel like I have a big inner tube around my waist-especially upper abdomen. I have had to go up a pants size since starting Januvia in January.

Are you on any other meds? Insulin?

No, not on insulin. Just take metformin and have been for 2 years.

Ok, just checking. I'm trying so hard to remember what I read on our old Januvia blog about weight gain. I am having a terrible time recalling, but I feel like I remember some med (other than insulin) that people said could cause bloating or swelling or specific changes in the belly. I wonder if you are right about the weight distribution being caused by Januvia. I wish I could be of more help.

Maybe someone else will remember.

Geri, do you?

Januvia doesn't give weight gain. Please talk with your doctor. With the combination of the metformin you might see this extra weight if you are not doing any exercise.

You are probably thinking of Avandia and maybe Actos since I think they are both in the same class of drugs that puts on weight or actually bloat. Metformin is supposed to lower weight but that hasn't happened with me. Of course not everyone responds the same way to meds so it is possible some people could gain weight on certain ones while others don't.

I can't remember the exact right terms right now but what may be happening has nothing to do with meds but more with redistribution of fat cells to the belly, mostly above the waist, that occurs as part of the insulin resistence process. If a person is becoming more insulin resistant for whatever reason the body stores the excess glucose/fat for future use in the belly. The only way, that I know, to reverse insulin resistence is to stop eating processed foods, sugar, and exercise so the body will start using the stores. It has to be a total lifestyle change so it is for life not just a short term diet.

This is discussed in all the books I've read about reversing diabetes and there are specific terms but I don't remember them right now. Later I'll try to find time to look it up and post it if people are interested.

Yes, Sue, you are right--thanks! I bet Geri is right, too, about the weight gain or redistribution to the abdominal area being about insulin resistance rather than Januvia. I do know that Januvia is supposed to be weight-neutral or even help you lose a little weight, but as you say, no med works the same way for all people.

Information is always vital and it would be wonderful if you post what you know. So I would encourage you to go ahead and do it.

As for the weight distribution if one is exercising and still gaining weight it I would advice that person to speak with his/her doctor.

I have passed the info on in the past on the old blog, which we can't access anymore but right now I'm so busy with trying to get my garden planted, my workout room painted and keeping the new sod alive that I've been too exhusted to relook up the right terms and re post the info. Which would be great. So...I'm going to suggest the name of the book that got me started researching this stuff and let you read for yourself. When I get some of this work completed I'll re read my books too and we can discuss this under the meals, eating, and nutrition or some other folder that best fits the subject at hand.

The name of the book that got me started is called: The Schwartzbein Principle by Diana Schwartzbein an endo in Santa Barbara, Ca.
