I certainly think this merits inclusion in the Recommended Reading on the Start page. :)

I use Mark's thermos set up in the warm weather and even though getting those plastic bags in and out of the thermos is a bit of a struggle it works perfectly and keeps the temp just where it should be. What is so good about it is that when you use real ice you do not have to be concerned with a refrigerator and it is only a matter of replacing the ice when it melts but it is important to check the temperature to make sure it isn't too cold. Ice cubes vary in size so two or three might be enough rather than four but it really depends on how hot it is where you are I think. Anyhow it is a great idea and cheap enough.

I also use the travel case that Byetta offers for free but with either the hard blue ice packs or the soft ones and not the packs it comes with. Since we have more leeway now with temps on opened pens and can go up to 76 degrees it is handy to use for a few hours out.

Thanks Mark for giving so much time to your experiments and letting us know how to keep our Byetta pens safe.

I'm flying to the states from England for the first time with an unset pen. I bought a Medi Fridge Micro Cooler which hopefully will keep my Byetta cool for the duration. I'm estimating my entire travel time will be 13-14 hours from my home to my parents' in NJ.
They say that after 10 hours the temp will slowly rise for the next 10 hours so I feel safe.
I also bought a small Frio holder for the set pen because I know that I get hot in the plane and who knows what the temp will be.

dm: I know most people who have flown with Byetta, etc. reported no problems at all, but you'll have to tell us how it goes for you. Don't forget freezing will kill your pen much quicker than heat. It sounds like you're all set, so hope you enjoy youirself! :)

There is a period of time for new unopened pens when they can safely be kept at temps higher than recommended ones. This is sort of built into the system for delivery to the person taking the meds. Shipping time of the meds needs to be accounted for and that is why even a few days of not being refrigerated will not harm the unopened pen. I have been told this by the people at Amylin/Lily the manufacturer and by my mail order pharmacy. I was concerned when my last mail order shipment arrived with melted ice packs and didn't know if my meds would be safe to use.

Many of us Byetta users worry about keeping our pens at the right temps because we don't want to ruin them but knowing that we can safely use them even if kept at warmer temps recommended will make it less of a problem for us. I hope this helps to relieve you concern about traveling here with your new pen. Have a good trip and enjoy your visit.

Sorry about my previous post concerning temps. I meant to say that we don't have to worry about warmer temps than recommended but we do still have to be concerned with not letting the pens get too cold. Too cold and your pen will be ineffective.

Thank you both.

According to the bumpf about the mini cooler it is a perfect temp for Byetta. The instructions say to make sure that the ice pack is out of the freezer for a certain amount of time before you place it in the cooler and then add the pen to the holder that sits just above the ice pack.

My BIG problem will be trying to explain and reexplain to my mom and dad why I am not eating much and why I might be nauseous at times. I have a hard enough time explaining to them why I don't eat the same way as my dad (type 2- insulin user) and my sister (type2 and just eats anything she wants).

I also have the Medi-frige Micro-cooler. I have traveled with it by plane three times in the last year, with delays and all. It has kept my pen at the right temperatures. You can tell it's working well by your blood sugar readings three hours after meals. If they are similar to those at home, I assume the pen has made the trip. I also peel the prescription label off a box of Byetta and stick to the inside of the cooler lid. Then if the security folks have any concerns, I can show them the label. Happy traveling.

Hi Linda.
For the first since I started flying going through security was hell. I told the security people, 3 of them at different times that I had a letter explaining that I needed to carry on the Byetta in a cooler and the needles. They didn't care, never even glanced at the letter.

So my carrying on case (with the cooler) went through the machine and it beeped. I explained again and again it went through the machine where it beeped.

Now I was getting worried because I hadn't taken my Byetta yet and it was getting to be 10:30am, the time I wanted to take it.

So my case was put aside to be examined. I had to hang around for that and watched the security woman who I had spoken to twice about the Byetta ignore my case and deal with a man who came after me. *sigh*

Finally she brought my case over and proceeded to ask me if she could search it. I, of course, said yes, mentally screaming, get it over with. She took everything out and ran her magic wand over everything. I had to open the cooler. :@ I quickly unzipped it and another woman came over and asked if there was an ice pack, yes I said and then she said fine, they've had problems with it.

If she knew about it then why did I have to go through the whole thing? We put everything back and then I went to the ladies to jab.

Do you know why the cooler beeped when you went through security? I don't understand how ice packs caused it but is that what you meant? Anyhow I hope you enjoy your visit.

Hi, the woman with the wand and who watched my case go through twice the x-ray machine said it was the ice pack and that they have had problems with it before.

I had planned on putting it in my suitcase that is going in the hold for my return trip to England but with it beeping I am afraid to see what shape my case and things will be. I will probably put it again in my carry on, not frozen and see what happens.

Thankfully I start my new pen on Saturday.

I forgot how hot and humid it can be here in South Jersey.

I'll be in NYC next week finally meeting people I have 'talked' to on-line for the past 5 years.

DM: Hope you don't mind my jumping in here, but I just wanted to say you are the first person to ever post about that kind of trouble with traveling. Usually people get through all the security stuff very smoothly. I'm glad you told us about it, because maybe it is part of international traveling, and someone may need the warning. Gee...what a pain. Let's hope, though, that it was unusual, and that the trip home will be EASY. :)

I had a problem with my medicool pack one time too. They thought it was something that got caught in the seams of the case, talc or flour, or something like that. They told me to take an alcohol pad and rub down all the seams of the case, I did, and the next time it went through security easily.
