Full Version: Sorta missing Byetta

I was on Byetta for 4 yrs before going Victoza. I don't miss the twice per day shot routine timed to my meals but what I really miss is one side effect. You know, the one that helped you stay cooler during the summer. I'm hot and I just wish I could cool down some in our 95 - 100* weather. Even in air conditioning I'm melting, wish I was getting smaller but I'm just sweating a whole lot.lol

Have a nice hot day everyone.

Geri, on another blog I read only, which is supposed to be about Byetta but turned into a soap opera, they have several people who switched over to Victoza too, and one woman who always complained about being cold said she isn't any longer and now is sorry not to be.

Byetta sometimes in the beginning made me cold but mostly I am very warm although I suspect maybe not as warm as I might be without it. I would choose being cold to hot any day though. I'd love to be able to wear sweaters and jackets to keep warm but that hasn't happened.

I was able to enjoy wearing long sleeves during the winter for these past few years. I bought some new sweaters on sale this past spring so I hope I can wear them next winter:)

I'm on Byetta and last night I had an usual experience. After I completed my shot I noticed that blood had seeped into the pen. I did have blood on my skin, just a drop. Has this ever happening to any of you?

Liz, that has happened to people once in a while. I think your pen is now contaminated and should not be used. You can check with the Byetta hotline, but don't use it again until you do, ok?

Geri,

I have to agree with you, since being on Victoza, I no longer have that "cold" feeling, where I often had to put on a sweater or sweatshirt in the evenings, as I would feel so cold. I do miss that too, but am enjoying the once a day injections.

Teri, I guess we can't have it all. I enjoy the once per day shot thing too, freedom. I'm just drinking a ton of water and staying in air conditioning more than I've had to while on Byetta.

Thanks for the advice. I did call the clinic and the doctor said not to use it again.

Liz, I'm glad you called. You probably just hit a capillary and had the bad luck to have the blood enter the pen. Blood on your skin at the injection site wouldn't matter. Here's hoping contamination isn't an issue ever again. :)

Liz,

If you call the Byetta hotline they might replace the contaminated pen. I know they will replace pens due to pen defects, large bubbles, etc.; but I do not know about a pen contaminated with blood. You will have to call and ask.

To avoid a repeat of this issue, always keep very firm pressure on the pen plunger for at least 10 seconds, and then keep the firm pressure on the plunger while you withdraw the pen from the injection site.

An even better alternative is to keep firm pressure on the pen plunger and use the other hand to rotate the pen's plunger to the next position (the "up" arrow in the window) - e.g. where you are supposed to leave the pen each time after injecting. This is, more or less, the "off" position where the pen is not supposed to leak, and thus it should not allow any blood to back up into the medication chamber. After rotating to the next position, then withdraw the needle from the injection site. (Additionally, after rotating the plunger as described above, some of use even rotate the entire pen (back and forth a couple of times) before withdrawing the needle, thus in effect "wiping" the needle off inside the injection site - this will also avoid most issues with any drops of Byetta being left on the needle).

Mark,

Thank you for your suggestions. You're information will come in handy. You've sugguested things I wasn't told previously when I statrted using the Byetta. I am planning on calling the company in the morning. There was no answer on saturday when I tried.

Again thanks for the information. I hope you're doing good with diabetes. Have a good day.

Liz
