I was taking Byetta 10mg and it worked great then seemed not to do quite as well on keeping the sugar down or the eating. I switched to Victosa and that wasn't as good as Byetta even. My doc switched me back to Byetta and added 5mg of Onglyza and this morning I got a real shock!! I got up and took my sugar, 300!! I took it at about 10a and it was 233...I have a call into the doc but it's like I'm not taking any meds now. So confused!

It sounds like something is going on that is affecting your bood sugar. Are you under more stress than usual, ill or taking new meds (like steroids)? I'm sure together with your doctor you will figure out what is going on. Please keep us posted on what you discover and I hope things go back to normal very soon.

I've been very very tired lately and I'm guessing that is from the high sugar. Other than the tiredness I have been fine. Really no more stress than usual and not sick. I don't know...Makes me want to scream. I prefer the Byetta over the Victoza and now neither seem to be working. :( Thanks for responding.

I had something like that happen to me last week and it turned out to be a virus that was going around. I had very high numbers for 5-6 days and I increased my insulin to help bring them down. I had bad belching and gas after the first day of headache, then it went to a bad stomach, just didn't want to eat or do anything. I even missed pilates and boxing and I hate missing my classes since I've already paid for them.

I'm better now so check with your dr and see if there are any viruses going around.

Christsj: I think diabetes is such a complicated disease that figuring out which combination of meds and diet works for each individual can be very difficult. It's possible that your doctor will suggest trying another combination of meds with the Byetta--for instance, metformin or even insulin (that's ok!). How long were you on Byetta before it stopped working well? And could your diet (especially in the evening) have changed enough over time that it is affecting your numbers? Has your exercise schedule changed?

I do believe you can improve the numbers, but it may take some experimenting. Geri often suggests keeping a food/exercise/BG diary as a helpful way to see if you can pinpoint any problems. Timing of your meds is another issue that affects some people. And of course, as time goes on, diabetes can worsen, beta cells can wear out, and you can require more medications or a more rigid diet.

Also, did you mean that you stopped getting the appetite suppression with Byetta? If so, have you tried extending the time between injecting and eating? Or the injection site? If you haven't already, you might read Byetta Basics for some tips. The link can be found at the bottom of the Start page under Recommended reading.

Oh, and do your numbers get significantly better throughout the day? Is it only that fasting BG that is so high or all the time?
